PTIN/EFIN Assistance
Making Tax Compliance Simple
and Worry-Free
When entering the world of paid tax preparation, obtaining a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) is your first essential step. In addition, your tax business must secure an Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN) to file returns electronically. Let’s break these down:

Understanding the Preparer’s Tax Identification Number (PTIN)
A PTIN is required for all paid tax return preparers filing U.S. federal tax returns with the IRS. You can obtain yours online at irs.gov for $50.00 per year. PTIN renewal is mandatory each year after October 15th. At Pioneer Tax Software, partners must obtain and maintain a valid PTIN.
Important Note:
If your PTIN is under IRS investigation or associated with fraudulent activity, we cannot engage in business with you.
Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN)
An EFIN is a six-digit number issued by the IRS to entities authorized to participate in the e-file program.
The application is free but requires a suitability check, including fingerprints and a review of criminal and tax debt history.
Without an EFIN, you cannot electronically file tax returns or perform any e-file activities.

Unlock Your Opportunities:
- Run a tax preparation business without engaging in e-file activities.
- Pioneer Tax Software empowers you to securely prepare, authorize, and e-file returns with IRS-approved providers
E-filing Service Requirements:
- Must not be denied participation, suspended, or expelled from the IRS e-file program.
- Adherence to IRS e-file program rules and participation requirements is mandatory.
